WOMEN'S WORLD CUP: ENGLAND STOPS COLOMBIA (2-1) AND JOINS AUSTRALIA IN THE SEMI-FINALS
The last square of this Women's World Cup is known and it will be made up of three European countries. England took the best of Colombia on Saturday (2-1), in the quarter-finals, to join Australia, who fell for the France team earlier in the day. It is the third half in a row for the English selection, which has an appointment on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
The English will have fully maintained their status as favourites. Opposed to novice Colombians at this stage of the World Cup competition, the Three Lionesses won 2-1, after trailing for only a few minutes. The reigning European champions join the semi-finals once again after 2015 and 2019.
It was necessary to confirm its excellent course in this World Cup, with 4 victories in as many matches, and this is the task that the English selection accomplished this Saturday. More precise, better organized, the Europeans have much more mastered their meeting against Colombians sometimes suffocated by the opposing pressing.
The first period was very choppy at first, due to the sometimes excessive commitment of the two teams. On the English side, we tried somehow to flinch Perez, who perfectly foiled all attempts by Russo, Hemp or Daly. A wall that allowed Colombia to lead at the very end of the period thanks to a superb goal from Santos and a hazardous placement by Earps in the English goal (44th). A few minutes later, Perez finally cracked on her own, giving the ball with her own hands to the opponents, so that Hemp scored the equalizing goal (45 + 7th).
AND NOW THE HOST COUNTRY
A goal that allowed the English to take a psychological advantage over much less experienced opponents. Despite a few attempts from Chacon, who came on in the second half, and the young Caicedo, Earps did not crack on his goal line. England therefore took the opportunity to score the winning goal thanks to a cross shot from Russo against the Colombian goalkeeper (63rd). Despite the commitment of the Colombians during this second period, the English serenity finally allowed the Three Lionesses to keep the score and thus qualify for the third consecutive time in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
They will face the Australians on Wednesday August 16, who fell for the French team a little earlier in the day. It will then be necessary for the English to succeed in bringing down the host team of the competition, which will have the chance to play in front of an audience committed to its cause.
